As a nurse, it can be fun to watch medical shows to see what the writers get right (but, most often) get wrong about the reality of nursing and healthcare. So, next time you’re looking for a show to binge in your free time, use this as your guide!
Chicago Med
In this dramatic thriller, we get an inside look at the hectic lives of a team of medical professionals working in a hospital. Each episode features new patients with an array of different heath issues that these doctors must tend to. Although Chicago Med is considered a thriller, it doesn’t lack in the emotional aspect. Throughout the series, we get a good understanding of the many different relationships that develop in the show (IMDb, n.d.)
Scrubs
If you want to watch a medical show that lies more on the lighthearted and comical side, then Scrubs is the show for you. This comedy follows the lives of several nurses, doctors, as well as their patients in the fictional hospital - Sacred Heart Hospital. In the show, we see the main characters navigate their way through life in terms of their relationships and medical careers (IMDb, n.d.).
New Amsterdam
In the series, Dr. Max Goodwin, a medical director at the oldest public hospital in America, fights to bring the hospital back to the esteemed facility it once was. The hospital, nearly in shambles, has been run down and underfunded for years. While the staff at the hospital don’t believe that Max can and will revitalize the facility, he sets out to make it his goal (IMDb, n.d.).
The Good Doctor
This drama follows the life of a young autistic surgeon named Shaun. While he may be different from some of his colleagues, he is able to use his exceptional knowledge in the medical field to treat patients better than anyone else on the team. Although Shaun may have social struggles, this doesn’t set him back in his work, as he is intellectually gifted (ABC Network, n.d.).
Greys Anatomy
Known for its many seasons and wide popularity, the show Grey’s Anatomy is one that every healthcare professional has probably seen at some point in their lives. If you didn’t know, the show centers its attention on Meredith Grey, a surgeon who happens to be the daughter of a well-known and highly qualified surgeon, Dr. Ellis Grey. As the series goes on, we see Meredith deal with conflicts in her personal, romantic, and work life, along with the lives of her colleagues at Seattle Grace Hospital (IMDb, n.d.).
Private Practice
In this spin-off of Grey’s Anatomy, neonatal surgeon Addison Montgomery leaves Seattle Grace Hospital to work at a clinic in Los Angeles. The show follows the lives of Addison and her colleagues as they maneuver challenges in their personal and work lives.
Nurse Jackie
Already dealing with the stress of her job and relentless back pain, Jackie is a hardworking nurse who also battles a drug addiction. Being an emergency room nurse in New York City never fails to keep Jackie on her feet. While this show doesn’t fall short of its dramatic scenarios, it’s also sure to give you a good laugh (Screen Rant, n.d.).
