"The Small Wonder"
Delaware, otherwise called "The First State" or "The Small Wonder", is the first state that ratified the US Constitution on December 7, 1787. Delaware is steeped in history and offers a wide variety of historical and cultural attractions. The state of Delaware is the 49th biggest state. It is 96 miles long and varies from 9 to 35 miles in width. It is bordered by Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, the Delaware Bay, and the Atlantic Ocean. For the outdoor lover, Delaware offers much to be done and seen with fourteen state parks and 90 miles of coastline. Also, you have easy access to the major metropolitan areas of the northeast. Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, and Baltimore are all with in a two hour drive.
For the sports minded, Delaware is home to the Wilmington Blue Rocks, a minor league baseball team. The DuPont Country Club hosts the annual LPGA championship. A winter favorite is college hoops in Newark or Dover. Dover Downs features NASCAR racing, monster mile auto races, live harness racing, and slots. Also, there is the Delaware Park Racetrack and Slots Casino featuring live thoroughbred racing.
If nothing else captures your eye, you may want to take advantage of the tax free shopping in the state of Delaware. There are plenty of malls, outlets, and antique shopping available for those that love to shop.
Some of the annual festivities include the State Fair, Demarva Chicken Festival, the Great Delaware Kite Festival, the Nanticoke Riverfest, and the Jazz Festival.
